Two weekends out of London

For the past two weekends we have been out of London. The first weekend we visited Em and Sam's new place in Eton. They left at 6am on Friday morning in their van with lots of things from their new place.  They didn't stay long on a couch before they found their own place. Their flat is lovely and cute. It has a great view of the Windsor Castle. I think Em is hoping to spot the Queen or another royal any day now doing some shopping. We spent Saturday afternoon watching Sam debut in his first game for Windsor. He was even rewarded with man of the match scoring one try and setting up two. A very good effort for his first game. Saturday night we went to the local Thai for dinner. It was really nice to leave London and see Em's new place. They were so kind and got everything ready for our sleep over. They are both settling in well to their life in the UK. Sam is loving his job and Em is in search for the perfect job.

Last week Ben's dad and Julie arrived for a few days stay. They treated us to the tickets to see Les Mis on Thursday night. It was such a great production. We hadn't seen the recent movie but we didn't have any trouble following the story. Benny and I took the Friday off work as we were driving to Yate just outside Bristol. Keith, Julie, Benny and I were off to see Keith's sister and husband. Ben hadn't seen his aunt and uncle since he was around 3. While we were there we also met Ben's cousin and wife. It was nice to finally meet them. On Sunday morning Ben and I whisked out to have breakfast with my cousin who lives in Bristol and his girlfriend. We had such a yummy breakfast and a very delicious flat white. I just had enough time to have a quick look in the antiques store before heading back to London. Keith and Julie left early Monday morning to Kings Cross Station on their way to Edinburgh. They are going to be travelling now for the next five weeks.

This weekend we are staying around here and doing a few things before heading to Vienna and Cesky Krumlov for Easter. We are off to Vienna to see Jutta and Sebastian. Cesky Krumlov is just a 3 hour car ride from Vienna, so we are doing a little side trip. It is a small town that is world heritage listed. We are really looking forward to a few days off from work.

Just a quick visit to New York

We returned from New York in the early hours of Thursday morning after circling London for a good hour. Some of us (poor benny) didn’t take the day off work and had to go to work. I had a lazy day at home catching up on TV and having a slight disaster attempting to bake a lemon polenta cake which ended in muffins instead.

New York can only be described as fabulous. We had a great time with Lauren and Steve for five days. I hadn’t seen them in over a year. The weather was perfect, not too cold. We walked the streets, caught the subway and rode in the yellow cabs seeing lots of famous spots from films and TV shows.  I had been given a very helpful list of things to do through a work friend. It had great tips for restaurants, cafes and things to see.

We saw the Statue of Liberty via the Staten Island ferry. We went to the theatre to see Nice Work If You Can Get It. Matthew Broderick played the lead. It was great. Benny and I had a lovely dinner at a great Mexican restaurant on Bowery Street when Lol and Steve were at a Nicks game. We walked through China Town, and along the river and saw the Brookland Bridge. We wandered through Time Square, Soho and Noho looking at lovely shops. We strolled through Central Park and admired the dogs and tried to snap a good photo of  the many squirrels.  We went to the 9/11 Memorial and paid our respects. They memorial is very beautiful. We visited the Intrepid Museum which is housed in the
retired Intrepid ship. We we saw old war planes, space things and squished our way through a submarine. Sadly due to the cyclone that hit New York at the end of last year some things were closed. One highlight was seeing live music at a bar in Soho. The band was great and everyone singed including Steve. We'd definitely like to visit New York again, maybe in the summer next time.

On Friday night we had dinner with Em and Sam after work. We stopped by a cute little wine bar for a quick cocktail and beers. On Saturday we woke up after a good sleep in. We walked to Barnes to pick up some local produce to make seafood chowder for lunch and a roast on Sunday night. Sunday we just chilled out and Em and Sam concentrated on buying things for their new flat. Sadly they are living our sofa on Friday and we've been booked in to help move in on Saturday. It has been so lovely having Em and Sam visiting. Next week Benny's dad Keith and Julie arrive.
